Our latest project has been installed on its site at Fanad Lighthouse, one of the Great Lighthouses of Ireland.
The Intupod team worked closely with staff at Fanad Lighthouse to meet the design brief to create an exhibition space in keeping with the original lighthouse, voted one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world.
Fanad Lighthouse is located within Donegal Gaeltacht (an Irish speaking area), on the eastern shore of the Fanad Peninsula.
It is a breathtaking site and a highlight of the Wild Atlantic Way.
The challenge for Intupod was to replace the existing oil tank on the site which was used to fuel the helicopter based at the lighthouse with a replica space which could be used create a world class tourism space for up to 50 visitors.
This bespoke pod was designed to fit onto the original oil tank foundations and was finished to blend in with the lighthouse itself.
The pod measures 8m by 3.6m – the same width as a standard Intupod accommodation pod but 2 metres longer.
Fanad’s pod has two flat ends – one with an open gable front to provide a spectacular vista to the coastline and ocean.
The other end is a solid wall with a standard door which creates an element of surprise for visitors entering the pod and the view through the pod and beyond.
Pod build – 5 weeks
Project timeline – 12 months (from initial contact to installation)
Pod Size – 8 metres by 3.6 metres
